“Small donations given on a regular basis make a big difference”

Everyone needs food.

The Problem
  • Many children in Kibera are at risk of starvation.
  • The average daily wage in Kibera is just £1.50 and the money doesn’t go far.
  • It is not uncommon for a child to eat just one meal a day.
  • Parents often sacrifice their own meals to ensure their children can eat.
  • Inadequate nutrition in early life can lead to developmental and cognitive problems.
  • Hungry children can’t concentrate in school and generally achieve lower grades.
  • A lack of food significantly increases a child’s risk of mortality.
The Solution
  • Chaffinch aims to provide adequate and varied nutrition for all Future Stars’ residents.
  • We commit to providing a balanced diet for every child attending the school at Future Stars: children at high risk of malnutrition due to their home circumstances.
  • Children can work harder in school.
  • Absences from school due to ill health are reduced.
  • A child fed at the centre removes pressure on the finances of other family members. So feeding one child can mean another member of that family can afford to eat, have the strength to work and earn enough to survive.
  • Purchasing basic foods such as rice, beans and flour is essential. Meat, fish, vegetables and eggs provide additional important nutrients.

How you can help

Small donations given on a regular basis make a big difference.

Could you commit to 5, 10 or 100 meals for hungry children?

Purchase a specific item such as a bag of flour (£1) or a packet of milk (30p).

Child sponsorship is a great way to give a regular donation and ensure that a child has what they need to succeed.

Over 100,000 of Kibera’s children are orphans.

The Problem
  • Over 100,000 of Kibera’s children are orphans.
  • Other children are abandoned by family due to financial difficulties.
  • Some children run away from homes perhaps due to abuse or family disagreements.
  • The ‘streets’ of the slum and surrounding areas become home to children unable to access education and unable to feed and clothe themselves.
  • Many become addicted to glue, alcohol or drugs.
  • Without help, most of these children will have very little hope of a positive, safe, and productive future.
The Solution
  • Future Stars is a development and rescue centre.
  • It exists to help the most vulnerable children of the slum whenever such help is needed.
  • Some children come to live at the centre having been recently orphaned.
  • Some have lived on the streets for some time but are ready for a new beginning in a stable environment.
  • Others arrive at the centre having been referred by concerned family members or neighbours. These are children who are at risk of serious abuse or neglect.
  • Future Stars provides a home (and everything that goes with it) for these vulnerable children. However, the centre is not a children’s home, and every attempt is made to find family placement for each child. This can involve much effort tracing living family members who may be able to offer a home for their relative.
  • Some children remain at the centre until they graduate high school and begin their independent adult lives.

Show a child someone cares

sponsor a child

How you can help

Sponsorship shows a child that there is someone in the world who cares about them – even if that person is far away.

Sponsorship reassures a child that they have value as an individual and does a lot to combat negativity that frequently results from abuse, abandonment, or loss.

Each of these children has a story, and its often a distressing one. However, you could be part of the next chapter and help us make it better than the one before.

Bringing hope, positivity, and empowerment to Kenya’s disadvantaged children.

DID YOU KNOW?

Chaffinch is run 100% by volunteers so more of your money is used ‘on the ground’ in Kibera

Only 40% of Kibera’s children are in school

The Problem

  • There are few government school places in Kibera. Private schools charge high fees, so families cut back on food, water and fuel to fund education.
  • Typical costs: 2000 shillings per month. Typical adult’s earnings: 4000-9000 shillings/month.
  • Many children are unable to attend school.

The Solution
  1. Future Stars provides a low cost education.
  2. Fees of 600 shillings per month are welcomed but no child will ever be turned away due to an inability to pay.
  • Currently, the teachers are paid only a basic salary as there are no funds to cover an ideal teacher’s wage. They are often working a second job after hours or during the night to make enough money to survive in Kibera.
  • Upon graduation from the free primary school at Future Stars, funding a secondary education gives a young person greatly improves employment prospects.
  • Education is the key to opportunity. It’s a ticket out of poverty.
  • The best way to guarantee continuing education is through Child Sponsorship.
  • We are able to fund the education of a sponsored child right through to high school graduation.
  • There are many items needed for the Future Stars school to function, including: exercise books and textbooks, pens, pencils, chalk, erasers, rulers etc
  • We purchase within Kibera to provide income for small-scale shopkeepers, allowing donations to reach further than just the Children of Future Stars.
  • At present, there are simply not the funds to provide any significant payments to the teachers. We would love to remedy this with your support.
