Leave a gift in your will

A gift in your will can significantly help Chaffinch to support children in Kenya.
Chaffinch is a small independent charity run 100% by volunteers, so more of your money is used “on the ground” in Kibera.  We do not receive government support and rely on the generosity of people like you, so that we can provide hope, positivity and empowerment to Kenya’s disadvantaged children.

By making a donation in your will you are guaranteeing that your money goes where you want it to go.  Our governance documents guarantee that your money can only be used in line with the purposes of Chaffinch – to provide Food, Shelter, Education.

Leaving a gift in your will is a way to help a charity close to your heart. If you are passionate about helping children to build a better life for themselves, remembering Chaffinch is a wonderful way to help us support these children for years to come.

types of gift you can leave

Residuary Legacy – this is a percentage of the value of your estate (after debts, funeral expenses and any specific gifts) and will be calculated based on the value of your estate at the time of your death.  This can help to ensure you are not committed to paying more than your estate can afford and can ensure your loved ones are taken care of first.

Pecuniary Legacy – this is a fixed sum of money.  It can be large or small.  In this way you can decide the exact amount and it will not change.

Specific Legacy – this is used when you wish to leave a specific item (e.g. jewelry, property).  We strongly advise you to seek specialist legal advice for a gift in this category.

"Every penny counts. A gift does not have to be large to make a difference. Every amount you give allows us to help another child. We are sincerely grateful for every gift we receive"

FAQ's

How do I leave a gift?

We always advise that you seek legal advice to create your will.  The suggestions below are merely for guidance and to help guide your solicitor.

If you wish to leave a gift in your Will, we suggest the following wording:

I give (A)________  to Chaffinch (registered charity number 1173464 in England & Wales) for its general purposes and I declare that the receipt of the honorary treasurer or other proper officer of the said charity shall be a full and sufficient discharge of the said legacy.

For (A) you can say:

For a Residual Legacy:  “I give (x)% of my estate to…”

For a Pecuniary Legacy “I give (state the amount of money) to…”

For a Specific Legacy “ I give (state the item) to…”

Can I specify how the money is used?

Yes.  If you wish to support a specific cause you can specify this and we will only use your gift for this purpose.

By leaving money to Chaffinch you can already be sure we will use this in line with our governance and where it is needed most.  This is an “unrestricted” gift.

If you are passionate about education (for example) you can specify this in your gift and we will restrict the use of your gift to this area.  This is a “restricted” gift.  We are happy to discuss our main focus areas and needs to help you make your choice.

If you wish to make a “restricted” gift we strongly suggest that you seek legal advice and we would suggest the following modified wording:

I give (A)________  to Chaffinch (registered charity number 1173464 in England & Wales) for its general purposes and I express the wish but without creating any binding trust that this legacy be used in the (specify) areas and I declare that the receipt of the honorary treasurer or other proper officer of the said charity shall be a full and sufficient discharge of the said legacy.

For (A) you can say:

For a Residual Legacy:  “I give (x)% of my estate to…”

For a Pecuniary Legacy “I give (state the amount of money) to…”

For a Specific Legacy “ I give (state the item) to…”

Thank you for considering leaving a gift in your will. Every penny counts in bringing hope, positivity and empowerment to Kenya’s disadvantaged children. We are most grateful.
