Education is believed to be the number 1 way to improve the prospects of a child born into poverty. Yet, in Kibera, access to that education is denied to many.
With no government schools in the slum, families must pay to educate their children. School fees, uniforms, books, pencils, examination costs…it all adds up. And it’s beyond the reach of many.
Without even a basic primary school education, there is little hope of quality employment, of earning enough to take even the first steps out of a life of extreme poverty. And without access to school, boys are frequently pushed into work at a young age, and girls are at risk of being pressured into early marriage or domestic slavery.

Chaffinch works with Future Stars to provide completely free primary education to some of the most vulnerable children of the slum, providing everything from pencils and exercise books to examination costs and tuition.
