December 25th 2017 proved to be a very special day for 102 of Kibera’s most vulnerable children.

Christmas Day provided an opportunity for these children to put aside the hardships of life in the slum, get dressed up in their best clothes, and enjoy good food and fun. It was a chance for them to relax and simply to be children.

The 102 boys and girls who attended the centre for Christmas Day were made up of:

  • 14 children who live at Future Stars.
  • 78 children who attend the centre’s free primary school.
  • 10 children who are currently scheduled to join the free school in January 2018.

Christmas Food

Whilst the day began with a breakfast of hot sugary chai with jam sandwiches or bread and margarine, the real excitement is over Christmas Dinner.
For many children in Kibera, meat is rarely on the menu. It is expensive and therefore usually out of the reach of most Kiberan households. But, at Future Stars on Christmas Day, we have always ensured the children can enjoy both chicken and beef as part of their special meal.
Christmas Dinner 2017 consisted of:

  • Chicken and Beef
  • Potatoes
  • Rice
  • Vegetables
  • Chapati

All of this was produced by 5 cooks, employed for the day from an eager Kiberan workforce. These men and women were able to join the children for their special meal and also take home enough money to ensure their own families could celebrate this Christmas.

Christmas Messages from Chaffinch Supporters

Prior to Christmas, Chaffinch ran two appeals. One asked supporters to contribute an audio, video, or picture message that would be provided to Future Stars on a USB drive. The second requested Christmas cards addressed personally to the children.
We had a fantastic response, particularly to our Christmas card appeal. 417 cards were sent to Kenya along with the USB drive. This special parcel, delivered with the help of ParcelHero, was collected by the centre coordinator, Kevin.

The Joy of a Christmas Card

The cards distributed to the children meant something very special. Many children in Kibera have very little to call their own. Even clothing is often shared with siblings, and toys are scarce. So, to receive a Christmas card addressed solely to them is an amazing gift. In addition, the handwritten cards each testify to the love with which they were sent. Knowing that someone across the world cares…that’s so important to these children.

Special Messages from Sponsors

Some of our wonderful Child Sponsors recorded messages for their sponsored children. These were also passed on and much appreciated by the children.
The Chaffinch Child Sponsorship Programme provides an amazing opportunity to develop a personal connection with a child in Kibera. Sponsors receive letters and drawings several times a year, plus lots of photographs and the chance to communicate with their sponsored child. Sponsorship supports a child through their education and ensures they have access to healthcare as well as providing for their regular daily needs.
