Sometimes people wonder how much difference it really makes when they sponsor a child with Chaffinch. So, here is the story of Boaz – one of the first children to find a sponsor.
Boaz was born in 2001 and, since losing his parents, has lived at Future Stars for several years.
He has always been enthusiastic in his studies, and harbours a dream to become the President of Kenya. He has truly taken to heart the message that every child is a future star and that it doesn’t matter if you begin as an unregistered child of the slum.
How has Boaz benefited from sponsorship?
Thanks to the Chaffinch Child Sponsorship Programme, Boaz has been guaranteed healthcare, a safe place to call home, and enough food to eat. Possibly even more importantly, he has been able to access an education. He has worked hard in his time at the Future Stars school and beyond into the higher classes of primary school. Frequently (almost without exception) his exam results have placed him at the top of his class.
In 2016 Boaz was in Class 8 – the final class of primary school. This meant that he was ready to sit the final exams (KPCE), which would allow him access to a high school education. However, without a birth certificate, he was unable to register for the examinations. His sponsorship was able to pay for him to acquire a valid birth certificate and thus sit his exams. Without this, he would be denied a secondary education, which can have serious consequences for a child’s future.
So what is happening now?
Boaz passed his KPCE with the highest marks in his school. Because of this, he was able to gain a place at one of the highly coveted boarding schools. Thanks to his excellent results, his first term’s fees were paid. And, thanks to Chaffinch Child Sponsorship, Boaz was able to purchase all the necessary items required to enter the school. This included school uniform, personal care items, sports kit, school equipment such as exercise books and a calculator, and everything for his bed including a mattress, blankets, pillow, and a bedcover in the school colours.
Boaz always dreamed of attending the boarding school. For most children, this is not an option due to the higher fees and the necessity for so many items of clothing and equipment. However, thanks to Chaffinch Child Sponsorship and his superb exam results, Boaz has been able to fulfil that dream.
Boaz left for school on Monday January 9th 2017. He remains a part of the Future Stars family and will return to the centre during the holidays.
Personal Care Items
Bedding and Sports Shoes
Exercise Books and Blankets
And a suitcase to carry it all!
How much difference has sponsorship REALLY made?
- Without sponsorship, Boaz may not have had enough food to enable him to concentrate properly in school.
- Without sponsorship, Boaz may not have had a suitable place to do his homework.
- Without sponsorship, Boaz may have been absent from school more often due to illness.
- Without sponsorship, Boaz may never have been able to sit his final primary exams as he had no birth certificate.
- Without sponsorship, Boaz may have missed many days of school due to an inability to pay the fees.
- Without sponsorship, it would have been impossible for Boaz to attend the boarding school.
And what about the future?
Boaz is now attending a school that will give him a real chance for a positive future. Alongside his studies, he will develop social and teamwork skills through living with so many other boys. We hope that his final exams of high school (KSCE) will follow his past trend and that he will achieve grades that will open up a whole world of opportunity. Boaz is now a healthy, happy teenager whose chances in life have been greatly improved by the Chaffinch Child Sponsorship Programme.
I’m sure you will join with us in wishing Boaz all the best for the future.
