From March 23rd to 26th, the teenagers of Future Stars attended a Christian Camp that provided much fun during the school holiday. It also allowed this vulnerable age group to learn more about how to live a good life and to stay away from the dangerous and negative temptations that the slum has to offer these teens.
More than anything, they laughed, smiled, and enjoyed themselves!

Dancing and Music

From the very moment of arrival at camp, there was music and dancing. The children enjoyed many sessions that included faith songs, lessons in the form of dance, and plenty of just ‘being children and having fun’ dancing. It was important for the children to throw off some inhibitions and begin to throw themselves into the experience

Games

Another major part of the camp experience were team games designed to help the children learn to trust one another and to rely upon one another for support. The Future Stars teams were incredibly successful, winning almost all of the head-to-head games!
The children very much enjoyed learning new games and challenging themselves with lots of physical activity.

Food

Camp offered some amazing food for the participants. From breakfast in the morning (with the biggest mandazi we have ever seen!) to plates of rice and meat and fruits, the children loved the variety.

Learning

An important part of the camp was learning. The aim was to teach children some Christian values and ideas aimed at helping them to stay on the right track with their lives. There are so many temptations in the slum from drugs and alcohol to crime and prostitution, that lessons like these play a vital role.
Of course, the lessons weren’t all about sitting and listening. They frequently involved singing, dancing, playing and other activities. They definitely weren’t boring!

A Colour Party

The last day of camp was marked with a colour party, which the children enjoyed very much! There was so much music and dancing and fun and the children enjoyed being covered in the dust of powdered paint. It was a wonderful ending to an amazing experience.

Thank you

Huge thanks must go out to those who helped with the funding for twenty-three of Future Stars oldest children to enjoy this experience. A church group in the UK provided Chaffinch with the funds we needed and the Anglican Church of Kenya subsidised the places. It was a fantastic and valuable experience and the children are already begging to return!
