Chaffinch’s second purchase has increased the number of new textbooks by a further 128. There are now enough books for every class and each child will now have the sight of the appropriate textbook during their lessons. This makes teaching and learning so much easier as the children no longer have to spend so much time copying text from the blackboard.
You might think that buying textbooks improves the level of education at Future Stars, but that it has no impact anywhere else. You would be wrong.
These textbooks were purchased from a small book supplier within Kibera. This is a significant order for a shop run independently by someone living within the slum. The money made from the sale doesn’t go to big business running with massive profits. This money goes to a family struggling to survive in true poverty. Such sales can be the means to purchasing an extra bag of rice to feed the family, or another instalment on the rent to ensure they have somewhere to live and to work.
Chaffinch believes that the benefits provided to Future Stars are not the end. We can work to ensure that each shilling spent reaches as many of Kibera’s residents as possible. This begins with the choice to purchase goods from these individuals within the slum rather than heading to one of the faceless booksellers in the city.
